چکیده

A distnbuted amplifier based 5-tap tramversai filter using MESFET implementation of the Gilbert Cell as the tap weights has been designed for use as a fractonally spilfed adjustable equaluer in high speed optical c~mmunication systems. The effective tramconductance of the Gilbert Celi can be adjusted h m negative to positive values and therefore the transversal filter designed has adjustable positive and negative tap weights. With these tap weight variation capabilities the fkquency response of the filter can be significantly altered makùig it an attractive candidate for adaptive pulse shaping in optical receivers. This is the fiist t h e a transversal fiiter with adjustable positive and negative has k e n implemented. in this thesis a review of intensity modulatioa/direct detection @I/DD) optical communications is provideci with an emphasis placed on the requirement for adaptive Iinear equaiization using the transversal filter. The £idamentai theory behind the transversal fZ1ter in then presented. Next, the design techniques used in order to achieve a transversal fiiter with positive and negative adjustable tap weights are discussed. These include a discussion of the transversal fiiter building blocks: the distributed amplifier, lumped element aaincial eaasmission lines and the Gilbert Ceii. Once the building blocks are outlined the entire transversal filter MMIC design is introduced. Finally, simulateci and measured fkquency response and transient response resdts are presented for various tap weight configurations. Frequency response resuits demonstrate the transversal nIter is capable of achieving a variety of filtering fiuictions. Transient response results demonstrate the transversal flter's ability to alter the pulse shape in a 2.5Gbls system.

Distributed Transversal Filter for Encoding and Decoding unipolar CDMA signals

A novel structure that encodes and decodes very high speed unipolar Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) signals is proposed. This scheme is based on the analogy between the distributed amplifier and the transversal filter. By adjusting the gain of each tap and the delay between taps, the proposed device acts as a high-speed encoder (transmitter) or correlator (receiver). The theoretical analys...

Design of X Band High Power Amplifier MMIC Based on AlGaN/GaN HEMT

In this paper, we have presented an X band high power amplifier based on MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) technology for satellite remote sensing systems. We have used GaN HEMT process with 500 nm gate length technology with VD= 40 V and VG= -2 V in class E structure. The proposed two-stage power amplifier provides 25 dB power gain with maximum output power of 49.3 dBm at 10 GHz. ...

Performance analysis of adaptive transversal filters for high-speed lightwave systems

Abstract: The analysis of transversal filters based on a novel cell design in common-source configuration (TF-CS) is presented. Based on this approach, a distributed transversal filter was designed as a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) for optical-CDMA receiver systems [1]. In order to assess its performance, a transversal filter based on Gilbert cells (TF-GC) was designed using t...

Self-Equalized Distributed Amplifier for Wide Band Optical Transceivers

A novel technique for a self-equalized distributed amplifier is presented by showing the analogy between transversal filters and distributed amplifier topologies. The appropriate delay and gain coefficients of amplifier circuit are obtained by a Fourier expansion of the raised cosine spectrum in the frequency range of 0-40GHz.

Design, Analysis and Simulation of a Linear Phase Distributed Amplifier

In this paper a new method for the design of a linear phase distributed amplifier in 180nm CMOS technology is presented. The method is based on analogy between transversal filters and distributed amplifiers topologies. In the proposed method the linearity of the phase at frequency range of 0-50 GHz is obtained by using proper weighting factors for each gain stage in cascaded amplifier topology....
